History
My name is Janet Pogorelc, I’m 22 and I grew up in
Mount Isa in far North-West Queensland, Australia and moved
to Brisbane in 2002 to attend the Queensland College of Art.
I studied Graphic Design for three years and now work as
a Graphic Designer for RED-i Design. My day job is graphic
design but my night job and passion is illustration. In my
spare time I also do a bit of Irish Dancing which is great
fun. I live in Brisbane with my lovely boyfriend Darrell
who keeps me level-headed.
Illustration Style
Organic, feminine and psychadelic. I look back on old doodles
and they’re very similar to the ones I do now. I’ve
always been drawn to swirling and organic shapes and have
been told that my drawings are kinda psychedelic, which could
be a result of the 60’s music my parents have always
played. I often use pastel colours but every now and then
try to break out and use bright, bold
colours.
I usually do most of my drawings with a 2B pencil and sketchpad,
which I then scan and colour them in photoshop. I love the
freedom and flexibility that the computer gives you, but
find that
I’m most creative when I start with a hand-drawn work.
Influences
I’m influenced by many things. Fashion is a big one,
as well as old posters and there are a heap of female illustrators
from Australia that I find really inspiring. I love Art Noveau
and Art Deco and really identify with fashion from the 1920’s
and 30’s as well as the 50’s and 60’s.
I positively love the aethetic of Chloe, Marni, Bottega Veneta,
Willow and Lover, and have just discovered the devine dresses
of
Thai designers Sretsis and Senada Theory.
It’s also really refreshing to go to design conferences
such as Semi Permanent as they offer a melting pot of different
styles and ideas. Plus I wouldn’t keep sane if it weren’t
for my monthly dose of design and fashion mags, mainly Vogue,
Harper’s Bazaar and also Frankie and Yen who are really
great when it comes to supporting young artists.
